Viñas del Golf History
José Jurado was Argentina's #1 golfer during the sport's Golden Age, and is probably the most recognized figure in Argentinean golf history. Born in Buenos Aires in 1899, at the tender age of 8 he began his career in the golf world as a caddie for St. Andrews Golf Club. By the time José Jurado was 21, he had won his first of seven Argentine Opens. However, his most famous round was not a win, but a loss by one stroke to Tommy Armour when he double bogeyed at Carnoustie Golf Club's 17th hole at the 1931 British Open. The following year José Jurado founded the Argentine PGA, and has since been hailed "The father of Argentine Professional Golf."In 1953 José's son, Ricardo Jurado Sr., went Pro and enjoyed careers in both South America and the United States. Together with his son 40 years later, Ricardo founded Argentina's largest golf equipment business and embarked on a personal journey to combine two of their life passions: wine and golf. The result was the creation of "Viñas del Golf"; 718 acres of magnificent landscape combining championship golf, world-class boutique wine production, and traditional Mendocinian structures and agricultural techniques- located in the foothills of the Sierra Pintadas at the base of the Andes Mountains, in San Rafael, Mendoza. José's Jurado's legacy is honored by a replica of Carnoustie's 17th hole within Viñas del Golf's masterful course.
The original 718 acre estate was soon expanded when adjacent properties were purchased, resulting in an increase of vineyards and other cultivatable areas, the golf course, and an amazing addition of the neighboring desert hills. The expansion brought the total property area to over 2,050 acres (830 hectares), every new parcel of which offers spectacular views of the Sierra Pintadas as well as of the property itself.
Algodon Wine Estates - Viñas del Golf is now one of the premiere wine and golf estates in all of Argentina and offers championship golf, world-class boutique wine production, award-winning restaurant cuisine, delightful wine tours and tastings, luxury resort lodging with state-of-the-art amenities, breathtaking landscapes, and unparalleled views of the Sierra Pintadas, all located in the foothills of the Andes, in San Rafael, Mendoza; or what some refer to as Argentina's very own Napa Valley.
